The Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) is an international, independent, non-profit organization, established upon the initiative of Central Asian (CA) governments and to further the decision of the IV Pan-European Conference (Aarhus, Denmark, 1998). The Center launched its activities in 2001 when the Republic of Kazakhstan ratified the joint Agreement between the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and European Commission (EC) specifying our terms and conditions of operations in the country. The EU is the major donor of projects implemented by CAREC in CA regions. CAREC projects are implemented in cooperation with CA governmental organizations – Environment Ministries, Ministries of Economics, Education, Water Resources and non-governmental organizations under support of EU and other international organizations and donors. CAREC’s head office is situated in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan. The Center has country offices in the Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic, the office in Turkmenistan is operating under the support of NGOs, the Kazakhstan office plays the role of the CAREC Head Office. Goals and Objectives: Assist in the establishment of an inter-sectoral dialogue aimed to ensure environmental sustainability and encourage sustainable development in CA with governments, NGOs, local communities, business sector and donor community. Create opportunities to attract advanced knowledge, best international practices and technologies in the field of environmental management and sustainable development and apply them throughout CA. Enhance the role of civil society in ensuring environmental sustainability and sustainable development.
